Dorkbot is a monthly gathering of scientists, artists and designers doing, in their words, “strange things with electricity.” Started by Douglas Repetto in New York City in 2000, Dorkbot meetings are now held all over the world.

SENSE is the consumer version of Nemesysco’s LVA (Layered Voice Analysis) technology, originally developed in 1997 for security-related purposes. While LVA was designed to identify emotional situations associated with more formal investigations, SENSE has been adapted to identify the emotional make-up of an individual during regular day to day situations.

From our own Frank Granger, I got this link today:
http://abcnews.go.com/Amanda/
Which while not terribly futuristic, has a number of blogs/vlogs about some pretty cool things here and there, including a new super efficient car - the aptera. At 30k it’s a bit pricy, but what two-seater isn’t? Will probably pay for itself in gas if you drive it enough… i wonder how they passed the crash tests?

Well, we can’t really call it a daily dump, since it’s not daily- but it is for today! A few things came across the screen today:
- This has been out for a while, but if you haven’t seen the original or the remake, called “Shift Happens” it is a must-see (but long for the genre, at about 8 minutes. It’s a simple but elegant indication of where we’re headed, technology wise.
- A colleague sent me a link to The Whole Internet - which provides an interesting navigable map of the web.
- And this is what a savvy 14-year old is up to, technology wise. I found the note about Twitter to be intriguing.
Cheers for now…

Thru my gmail i saw a link to a phone called the “iphone killer” which took me to helio’s web site. A quick run-thru of the site looks pretty impressive - pricing seems good for what they are offering.
That in turn led to this video about some of the future of phones… he explains that 32 mobile devices are sold every second, and there are 4 births per second. He throws out some other interesting stats.
That page on CNET led to all kinds of interesting things, including here - the “future of housing in america”. I don’t think it’s all that, but interesting nevertheless. I was surprised to see them using wooden studs and not steel, and I doubt they are really optimizing design the way they should, but it’s a start.

Dr Paul Preston, an anesthesiologist from Kaiser Permanente along with Miami based Gaumard Scientific Company have developed Noelle, a life-like hi-tech mannequin. Noelle is helping teach doctors how to take care of women in labor by simulating complications that may arise during child birth. These complications are controlled by an engineer who can send wireless signals to Noelle from his laptop.

Just in from Computerworld, and article about the “October Surprise” and how once again the US is falling behind on innovative research. Of particular note, the quote “But it’s not going to be a surprise this time. We all see it coming.”
On a related note i was listening to a radio show about melting polar ice caps- and one climatologist used the term “death spiral” to refer to the amount of polar ice that’s disappearing. Which poses a difficult question- what do you do when you KNOW things aren’t right but it’s far beyond your capacity or anyone else’s to do anything about it?

The term ‘WEB 2.0’ was coined at a conference by O’Reilly Media in 2004 to describe a perceived second generation of the Web. This suggests that the second generation of the Web contains fewer isolated pockets of information and more integrated applications that utilize the internet as a platform.
I have recently discovered a WEB 2.0 directory site called ‘GO2WEB20.net’. On this site you will find hundreds of new and upcoming WEB 2.0 applications and services. If you want a highlight of some of these apps visit the company’s blog.
